Promat is a global leader in sophisticated fire science technologies. It is a proactive link in the worldwide network of Etex, whose consolidated turnover closed financial 2015 in excess of €3 billion. Active in 39 countries with 14 plants, Promat employs more than 1,300 colleagues dedicated to making the increasingly complex built environment a better place for all to live, work and prosper.

Synonymous with international quality, Promat products and systems are used in many building, marine, oil & gas projects. The company also has a specialised reputation for bringing the same high levels of quality fire performance and risk accountability to many different types of tunnel applications and underground structures.

Promat’s in-depth expertise is based on six decades of cutting-edge R&D. Through its renowned Knowledge Centre, Promat works to protect precious human life and property against the ravages of uncontrolled fire, smoke and fumes and heat.

Promat provides sustainable fire protection and high performance insulation solutions, using advanced PromaX®-technologies to protect and secure lives and property. Promat develops unique solutions for the construction and industrial markets, providing safety and savings in energy. A highly-qualified team of experts develops new products, new generations of existing products and improves the quality of products manufactured in different factories around the world to ensure leadership in fire protection and high performance insulation markets.

Promat partners with Aliaxis to ensure and promote the use of fire collars with plastic piping systems to guarantee fire safety for building inhabitants. Promat fire-resistant collars are manufactured using intumescent technology and designed to maintain the integrity of the fire-resistant element through which plastic pipes, combustible insulation, cables or fibre optic facilities pass. Fire collars are suitable for installation in the various types of floors, partitions and ceilings in which they have been tested.

Heriot-Watt University was founded in 1821 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and has established a reputation as a leading research-led university and provider of education around the world, with campuses in several locations including Dubai and Malaysia.

Heriot-Watt University’s approach to research links fundamental cutting-edge advances in engineering with applied research in a two-way knowledge exchange with industry. The impact of its engineering research is felt internationally across many industry sectors. The University draws on extensive expertise, a broad knowledge base, state-of-the-art facilities, and a large network of academic and industry collaborators to tackle a wide range of challenging problems and generate practical solutions.

Within the area of sustainable buildings, Heriot-Watt’s Architectural Engineering staff have a long track record in research on low-carbon buildings, modelling and design, and the understanding of energy and water use in the built environment.

Heriot-Watt and Studor (part of Aliaxis since its acquisition in 2017) have collaborated for many years on research and development on a range of innovative new products. The P.A.P.A. (Positive Air Pressure Attenuator) is one of the results of this partnership; many other developments are currently in process, with the potential to revolutionise the high-rise building drainage market.

Heriot-Watt University developed AIRNET, a research tool that simulates the behaviour of a drainage system over a predetermined period, so simulating unsteady state flow. AIRNET models the passive and active boundary conditions in a drainage system in a method of characteristics (MoC) simulation. It then takes these boundary conditions and the driving functions which determine entrained airflow and together with data entry to describe the system and the connected appliances, simulates the system behaviour. AIRNET has been used in the development of P.A.P.A. technology.
